How to Create Zalgo Text

If you've spent any time on internet forums, Reddit, or gaming chats, you have likely encountered text that looks like it is melting, glitching, or possessed. It spills over into the lines above and below it, creating a chaotic, unreadable mess. This internet phenomenon is known as "Zalgo text," and creating it is easier than you might think.

What is Zalgo Text?

Zalgo text gets its name from an old internet meme involving corrupted comic strips and a fictional entity called Zalgo. The aesthetic is meant to imply that the text itself is corrupted or demonic.

Technically speaking, Zalgo text is just normal text that has been heavily modified using Unicode combining characters. In the Unicode standard, there are special characters designed to be layered on top of or underneath standard letters (like accents in French or Spanish). Zalgo generators simply take a normal letter and stack dozens of these combining characters on it randomly. This causes the text to expand vertically, creating that signature creepyiness.

How to Generate It

You cannot type Zalgo text naturally on a standard keyboard. You have to use an online generator.

1. Find a Generator: Search for "Zalgo text generator" or "Glitch text generator" in your browser. There are hundreds of free options available.
2. Input Text: Type the phrase you want to corrupt into the main text box.
3. Adjust the Glitchiness: Most good generators have a slider or settings that let you control how crazy the text gets. You can usually choose how much the text spills upward, downward, and across the middle.
4. Copy and Paste: Once you are satisfied with the level of glitchy chaos, copy the text and paste it wherever you want.

Where to Use It

Zalgo text is mostly used for humor or shock value. It’s incredibly popular in Halloween-themed posts, horror gaming communities, or just for messing with friends in group chats.

However, you need to use it responsibly. Because Zalgo text physically invades the digital space around it, it can obscure other messages and make interfaces completely unreadable. Some platforms and Discord servers actively ban the use of Zalgo text because it can cause visual clutter or even lag older devices that struggle to render the massive stack of characters.

Furthermore, it is entirely inaccessible to screen readers, making it a nightmare for visually impaired users. Use it sparingly, keep it visable but contained, and only in informal contexts where the joke will be understood!
